Pico mountain with 2.351m is the highest mountain of Portugal. One of the exciting tours is climbing up Pico
mountain and on clear days one can see all five islands of the central group.
The tour is demanding, but not "alpine", one is climbing on sharp volcano ash.
More exhausting is the way down because the route is a bit steep.
If clouds, rain, fog show up, it may even become uncomfortable conditions, but weather can change quickly!
Contrary to some literature, you do not need a tour guide but if you wish, we can organise one
for you. Besides having a lot of information for you, they are very familiar with the mountain and can help in any situation.
You just have to check in at the mountain station, pay 10,00 € and you will be equipped with a GPS-system. In the
most unfortunate "case of cases" the mountaineers will than know your exact location and come to help.
Climbing up will take about 2-3 hours, after a short rest at the crater we might visit the "little Pico".
The downward journey will take app. 3-4 hours.
Necessary equipment: good shoes, maybe walking sticks, a warm jacket, a rain jacket,
good sun protection, water and some food (chocolate etc.).
